It seems self-evident that one who is not part of a football team is not a football player, for no one plays football by himself. So it is with Christianity. St. Paul writes that we belong to Jesus and are members of His Body, united to one another. Yet many people would like to consider themselves or be considered Christian, and yet never or rarely attend the gathering of the Lord Jesus. We justify this paradox by saying that we don't need church to believe in God or in Jesus or to be Christian. But Jesus says otherwise. "Unless a man gathers with me he scatters" (Luke 11:23) and the author of Hebrews writes, "Let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near" (10:24-25, ESV).
The Holy Spirit calls us by the Gospel and gathers us together with Jesus, enlightening us with His gifts, sanctifying us with the Word, and keeps us with Jesus Christ in the one true faith. That's what the Divine Service is on Sunday. We hope to see you at the gathering of Jesus.
If you believe that Jesus of Nazareth, the Son of Mary, is the Son of God, and was crucified, died, and was buried for the forgiveness of sins, and rose from the dead and ascended to God the Father's right hand where He intercedes for us and prepares a place for us in His Father's kingdom, but you are not attached to a congregation, Pr. Lovett would be happy to speak with you about joining our congregation as a member of the Body of Christ. Please email Pr. Lovett or go here for more information on joining our community, the community of Jesus.
