Tough Questions

The tough questions that face the Church are mostly born of two related questions:

     1) What is the doctrine of the apostolic and prophetic Scriptures (i.e., how do we read/interpret the Scriptures?);

and,

     2) How does this doctrine inform practice?

The Church of God has always faced tough questions. In the first decades after Jesus rose from the dead, the Church faced the question of Gentile inclusion.  The matter was settled at the first ecumenical council, the Council of Jerusalem. Since then every generation of the Church has faced tough questions such as whether Jesus is God or simply really good; is God a true Trinity or does God display Himself in three modes?  These types of questions have been with the Church even down to our day.

The articles on this page are an attempt to engage some of the tough questions of our day, trying to give clarity to what we believe, teach, and confess according to the Scriptures.  The questions wrestled with here concern doctrine and practice.  The topics range from the ordination of women, to communion practice, to the influence and importance of tradition and history, to why some Christians won't pray with other Christians, even concerning the idolatry of other religions and sects.

It is the prayer of those who submit these articles that they will be a blessing to those who read them, working toward the unity of the Spirit we share in Christ Jesus, our only Lord and Savior.

[The articles below that have a synopsis under the title are ready to be read.  The others are forthcoming.]

    How do Christians settle disputes concerning doctrine and practice?  What or who is our guide?  This article sets forth the authority of the Scriptures, arguing that matters of doctrine and practice are settled according to the Scriptures alone and not by voters' assemblies, popes, tradition, or synods.
